How to Create a Safe Place to Talk About Dangerous Things

Therapist Jeff Ford shares advice on how to respond when someone tells you they have a problem with pornography.

Part 1 - The 5 Cs - Compliment

It is a compliment  when a child comes to you to discuss issues with pornography. COMPLIMENT them for coming to you to speak about this scary and dangerous topic. Keep the lines of communication open.

Part 2 - The 5 Cs - Commit

Pornography viewing is a highly addictive behavior and can take years to stop. COMMIT to your child that you will support them and help them for as long as it takes. Talk about this regularly.

Part 3 - The 5 Cs - Calm

Stay CALM and don't over-react with your child. You can express your emotions elsewhere but with your child you need to be calm. Don't shut down or ignore the problem. Stretch out your arms to your child and calmly work through this together.

Part 4 - The 5 Cs - Composed

Manage your own emotions so that you can be a secure base for your child.  You may need to take time to figure out how to help so that you can keep your COMPOSURE when you are working through this with your child.

This is the most important component. Create a safe place for your child to make a real CONNECTION with you.
