Pornography can be addictive.

Not only is decreasing exposure to triggering media important, but it is also important to personally monitor ongoing emotional and relational health that could increase vulnerability.

Pornography is often used as a way to deal with negative emotions and to cope with life’s problems, just as alcohol or illicit drugs might be abused. Help your children find healthy ways to deal with stress, anxiety, fear, boredom, and insecurity in their life. Because pornography is readily accessible and can serve as a way to cope with anxiety, fear, boredom, etc., it often is used.

If pornography has already plagued your family, the battle isn't lost.

Watch for negative changes in a child's behavior. If any such changes are noticed in a child's behavior, or you're concerned about possible pornography use, it is important to talk to the child and get help immediately.

Here are the steps to get the help you need.

Successful recovery usually requires:

  • Education on the harms of pornography
  • Attending 12-step group programs
  • Involving a faith leader's help
  • Working with a qualified counselor online or in person

Recovery also requires lifestyle changes:

  • Finding mechanisms for coping with stress
  • Learning triggers so they can be avoided
  • Having a support person, outside of the family, where you can be accountable
